What’s the Project? If you need ideas for a simple way to have fun with your family, this Hawaiian themed family fun day is a great way to keep everyone laughing and making memories. These easy ideas can be adjusted to work just right for your family and they are really easy to pull off without too much work or money on your part!
Making memories with your family is such a fun and important thing, but when you’ve got little ones who want to do well, little kid things, and teenagers who want to do well, nothing and who tell you that your idea of “fun” isn’t actually fun…well, challenge accepted, right?
And as it turns out, this family fun day is actually fun…and my teenagers are proof of that (and admitted to it after a fun night). This is an activity that the whole family can really enjoy and though I am going to share several ideas with you, you can pick and choose and make it what works best for you and your family.
Honestly, we’ve had a ton of fun with these ideas with very little work and I think you and your family will love it too! Here is a rundown of how our night went so that you can use these for your family fun day too!
Simple Hawaiian Themed Party At Home:
This was an activity that we did during the quarantine as a way to keep everyone happy and entertained and to make memories together during that time. And it was a hit. Here’s how we did our night, you can use whatever works to make yours amazing too!
Hawaiian Dinner:
Food: We got takeout from a local Hawaiian restaurant because we wanted to keep this simple (no cooking). You could also make some Hawaiian food at home if you prefer. Here are a couple of ideas:
Drinks: But most importantly, we made family-friendly piña coladas which were a HUGE hit with the boys. (Of course, we added more sugar than the recipe called for which probably made them even yummier.) If we could have gone to the store we might have added little paper umbrellas to our drinks.
Here is the piña colada recipe.
Dessert: We ended our feast with a yummy pie that was a knock-off of our favorite in Hawaii…the haupia pie at Ted’s Bakery. Grab the haupia pie recipe here. Here are a couple of other fun dessert ideas if you prefer:
Fun: Once we had our dinner, we spread out beach towels on our living room floor and sat on them to eat. Now, the teenagers of course scoffed, but it added to the atmosphere and made it FUN!
Oh, and of course we played Hawaiian music while we ate!
Hawaiian Games:
We finished our dinners and then played a handful of games. We kept this part really simple and only did three games, but you can do more if you’d like. Here are some ideas.
Limbo: We started with a simple limbo because, why not? All we needed was a broomstick and we googled for a limbo song and everyone danced their way under the limbo stick. Great fun!
ʻUlu Maika: We then played a Hawaiian form of bowling. This one was also super simple. The traditional Hawaiian way to play is with wooden stakes in the yard, but we simply put two cans on the floor and played indoor with a rubber ball. Get the instructions for this game here.
Volcano Race: We also did a cup stacking game and pretended it was related to volcanos (see how creative you can be-anything works!) We used the cup stacking minute to win it game here and called it a volcano.

Hawaiian Movie:
We ended our party at that point, but it would also be fun to watch a Hawaiian themed movie to end the night. Here are some ideas of good movies!
- Lilo and Stitch
- Moana
- Toy Story Hawaiian Vacation
- South Pacific
Enjoy your family fun day with this at-home Hawaiian party!
