You know about my wild and crazy family of boys. You can imagine that something like a foam sword is a big hit among the little boys in our house. But the truth is, I love these foam swords too because they don’t hurt when they hit each other! Can’t beat that right? Here’s how to make a foam sword from a pool noodle:
So quick, so easy and costs under $3 each! Not bad right?!
And really, they can whack each other pretty good without it hurting:
How to Make a Foam Sword:
- 1/2 pool noodle (you want the kind with a small hole in the center of it-about 1/2 inch in diameter)
- PVC pipe-I got this at Lowe’s. It was pre-cut at 2 feet long and was 1/2 inch diameter
- PVC slip cap
- Packing tape
- Optional: leather or felt for hilt decoration
Cut the noodle in half.
If you want to make a little hilt decoration, cut an oval from leather or felt that is about 10 inches long and 4 inches wide (or so) and has a 1/2 inch hold on each end. Slid this onto the end of the PVC pipe like this:
Cut a piece of packing tape. Form a loop with it with the sticky sides out. Wrap this loop around the pvc pipe:
And then just wrap till it is all the way around. The sticky side is out:
Slide the noodle down on the pvc pipe most of the way but leave about 6-8 inches as the hilt.
And that’s it! It’s a perfect birthday party activity and favor or just a fun idea for anytime!
