The flowers are in full bloom here-are they for you? May is making me so happy because it’s been so warm and Springy! What’s better in May than a great Spring sewing tutorial? We have Paola from Sweet Julia Boutique here today with a tutorial for a cute little flower purse tutorial. Perfect for little girls!

Here’s Paola!
Well you know the saying, April showers bring May Flowers, so I had to make my little one a special bag for this month, and the best part of all is that you don’t need a whole lot of fabric, I used mostly scraps. Let’s make it!

Flower Purse Tutorial:

Supplies Needed:

  • Fabric Scraps
  • Purse pattern, available here: Flower Purse Pattern (Please note there are two pages to print)
  • 1 6 inch Zipper (could also use a longer one and shorten accordingly)
  • Basic sewing supplies, sewing machine

Instructions:

Step 1:

Cut your pattern pieces and:

  • Four  3″ X 1″  pieces for zipper ends
  • One 3″ X 36″ piece for strap

Step 2:

Create strap by sewing strap piece, right sides together with 1/2″ seam allowance, turn with a turning tool or pin, press and topstitch if desired. Set aside.

Step 3:

Place zipper end pieces right sides together on one end of the zipper, so zipper is “sandwiched” in between both pieces.  Sew 1.5″ from the end and fold over, press and repeat with opposite side. Trim 1/4″ from each side.

Step 4:

Attach zipper by placing 2 front pieces (1 main, 1 lining), right sides together along one end of the zipper, on the straight side of the pieces. The zipper will be “sandwiched” in between both pieces. Use your zipper foot if at all possible. Repeat with opposite side. Topstitch if desired.

Step 5:

Grab your petal pieces and pin them right sides together, sew along the rounded edge with a 1/2″ seam allowance. Clip the raw edges with pinking shears. Turn right side out and press.

Step 6:
Run two rows of gathering stitches on the straight side of your petal pieces and gather to 2.5″.

Step 7:

Arrange petal pieces on top of front side of your purse, pin and sew with a 3/8″ seam allowance, being extra careful when going over the zipper as it will be bulky.

Step 8:
Sew straps using the pattern piece placement guides.

Step 9:

Place main back piece on top of petals, right sides together  and sew around the whole circle with a 3/8″ seam allowance. Make sure to keep the strap out of the way and be careful when you reach the zipper.

Step 10:

Place lining piece on opposite side of zipper, with front side lining right sides together with lining piece. Sew around leaving a 3″ opening for tuning.  Turn inside out and close the opening in the lining side.  The right side of the bag will be on the inside.

Step 11:

Use the zipper opening to turn the purse inside out, exposing the right side of the fabric. Press and you are done!!
