What’s the Project? This chapstick keychain holder pattern is super quick and easy to sew and fits right on your keychain so you will always have your chapstick with you. These make great gifts and are a fun beginner sewing project to try!
I’ve enjoyed giving you very quick and easy sewing projects to try lately. Sometimes you want to sit and sew something and don’t have a lot of time. Plus, it’s fun to just sit down and get a project done from start to finish in a short amount of time, right?!
This one is so fast you won’t believe it! Anyone with basic beginner sewing skills should be able to do this too, which is nice. It could even be great for kids or teens to sew.
It’s a keychain chapstick holder pattern and I think you’re going to love it!
Keep this handy thing on your keychain so that your chapstick or lip balm or lipstick is always ready for you!
Lots of my readers have said they make this as a gift like a stocking stuffer or for something like teacher appreciation. You can make a bunch of these fast and it’s a great scrap fabric project too!
Be sure when you make this that you know what type of chapstick you’re going to be using in it, because they do vary in size and you’re going to want to plan accordingly for that. It’s totally customizable to whatever size you want to make. Here’s the pattern:
Chapstick Keychain Holder Pattern
Supplies
- 1 Small scrap of fabric
- 1 Key chain ring (get these at a craft store or online)
- 1 Tube of chapstick
Instructions
- Start by cutting your fabric. You just need one piece. Cut it about 3 1/2 inches wide and 9 inches long. *Alter this is if your chapstick is different than standard size.
- Fold it in half with right sides together and sew up the long side.
- Turn it right side out and press it flat with the seam on one side.
- Hem one edge by folding it under about 1/2 inch, pressing it flat, folding it under 1/2 inch again, pressing it flat then stitching across that spot.
- Flip it over so that you are working on the other side. Hem the other end. Then, fold it up a couple of inches so that there is just an inch or two left at the top.
- Sew up both sides of the part that you just folded up. This photo shows the back view.
- Thread your top hem through your key ring and you're done!
I hope you loved sewing this chapstick holder keychain!

I wonder if you could do.a double sided one to hold both a chapstick and a mini hand lotion or hand sanitizer. You would have to make it about 13 inches long and W fold from the middle. I think I might try this. Great idea! I am looking for inexpensive gifts that I can make from home this year due to the “rona. Thank you for such a truly wonderful blog post and video!

I love this idea ,but I made it a little bigger to hold my Bear spray canister.

VERY CUTE PROJECT BUT BEWARE: The size was WAY TOO SMALL for a regular size Chap Stick. I was so sad–I had already pre-cut fabric for 20 of these and all of them are too small 🙁 The length was fine but you need to adjust the width to 4.5 at least. Try ONE piece of fabric first to see if it matches your chapstick, otherwise, you will probably regret it.

where is video!?

Right under Sewing Instructions. It’s the first thing.

Thank you for the wonderful tutorial & directions! I can’t wait to make them tomorrow morning!
Robin says
Of course…too wide and the key ring needs to be large. I really have to sew more often! This should be basic for me. You have a fantastic website with really great projects! 😍 Thank you!
Robin says
Having to cut wider fabric and narrower beginning seam to make sure lip balm fits at the end. I should have sewn a 1/2 inch seam and not 5/8. Can always sew the sides in further for a snug fit.
Robin says
Made this last month for my niece’s Birthday. Added a lip balm and hooked it onto a zippered pouch I also made. It went into a tote I made. She loved it all. Gonna make another lip balm holder for my other niece too. Fantastic idea!

I have made this many times over and have the problem it was too loose.. so I adjusted what I was doing.. so now, the chapstick is nice and snug… great right, nope, lost my chapstick.. so I was thinking maybe put a snap on it?
Carmen Cochrain says
I had a candle party and I gave these to all my girls. They LOVED them. I had to couple extra for some of their daughters….LOL. After I put the key ring on I added a clip and it hangs on the outside of my purse. I love it!!
Amber says
Awesome! So glad you like it!
Huntress says
What keeps the chapstick from falling out? Does it stay because it fits very snug in the holder or did I miss something in the video? It looks to me that the holder is straight up and down with there being a pocket at the bottom with the chapstick then it’s open fabric for a couple inches until you reach the top where the keyring is located at. So there’s no closure like velcro or a snap keeping it in the pouch? Sorry if my question seems stupid but I just got my first sewing machine and I am just learning how to sew. Thank you. I love this project and can’t wait to get started making a few to gift to some friends. I would like to modify a couple to accommodate the little bottles of hand sanitizer as well.
Amber says
Yes, it fit in there snug enough that it shouldn’t fall out. 🙂

Thank you. I wish I would have taken a picture of the one I made for my Mom for Christmas. I had found a beautiful keychain with a cross on it that was on clearance for $1.00 and I knew my Mom would love it. My Mom also is forever looking for her Chapstick and I didn’t want to give her 2 separate keychains. In order to get the cross to lay flat on the back of the holder I cut a triangle of the fabric out after I folded down the top edge where the ring goes through then I unfolded it and stitched the edges of the cut to reinforce and folded it back up to sew the hem. I took the cross off the keychain put the connector piece in the hole and threaded the ring through the top as usual. It turned out amazing. She loved being able to have her chapstick with her at all times. So Thank You for sharing all these wonderful projects that even a beginner like me can make something special.

Each year, I make simple, functional birthday gifts for everyone on our list. Often, I struggle to find something adaptable for all ages & genders that doesn’t take hours or break the bank. Your idea hits all the right marks! I’m making my own lip balms, and giving sets of three to each person. Thank you for sharing your wonderful idea.
Amber says
I am so happy to hear that!
Zoggz says
I fixed it and it works great now. Thanks!

I tried this and for some reason a regular sized chapstick didn’t fit in it. I probably just made it wrong but I thought that I should let everyone know. It’s really cute though!

The directions say there is a video to watch, but I don’t see a video link anywhere.

It’s right in the post below sewing instructions. 🙂

Hmmm. Not in Google Chrome when I look. It is on my iPad, but after watching the ad it says the video in not available. 🙁

What stitch did you use? Backstich?
Amber says
Just a normal straight stitch. 🙂

Love this! Made one for myself that was quickly stolen by a friend. Obviously, I will be making many more. I’m going to modify the measurements for some so they will hold a can of pepper spray (this was requested by another friend). Can’t wait to get busy on both. Thanks so much.

Smart!

This is so cute and perfect for using up my many scraps of cute fabric. I carry around at least 2 tubes of chapstick at all times, so I’ll probably make 3 or 4! 😉
Patience says
I made mine out of a thicker fabric and fashioned it into a penholder with a little snap on the inside of the ends.
Susana says
Very beautiful. It should have something in the top for not to follow. A strap maybe. But still very beautifull and simple.

Use a 3 1/2 inch by 9 inch piece of fabric for the holders. Any kind of none stretchy fabric will work. I used denim.

I already had homemade lip balm on my list to make for Christmas gifts. I saw this post and knew it would be the perfect accompaniment! I bought a couple of cute fat quarters at the hobby shop and whipped up 24 of these holders. (I could make 24 out of one fat quarter.) I also added a lobster clip to the ones I’m giving to ladies. I don’t like a lot of things on my keychain, but I would clip it to the tab of a zipper inside my purse. Thanks for the inspiration and great instructions.
Inge says
i made a gift-set today, including your chapstick holder. It’s on my blog. Thank you for your ideas!

I bought a package of 10 key rings at Walmart for $2 about a week ago….great idea! thanks for the instructions!

Thank you for the very good, clear instructions! I was killing myself trying to find neoprene chapstick sleeves but they can only be ordered in bulk of 100. I just wanted something practical to give as a favor at my sons 7th birthday party. Yes, my son. Boys like chapstick too, but usually its alll geared for girls. I used fabric that coordinated with our superhero theme and found a pack of rings and lanyard clips for a few bucks at my local craft store. EXCELLENT! I made separate rainbow ones for the girls, and a couple extra for me and my family/friends.
The hardest part for me was turning the sleeve right side out.
Carlette says
Amber, where do I get the rings for the holder?
Amber says
I ordered them on Etsy
SA says
Instructions were perfect. Thanks to the comments, I made my sides seams very close to the side edges. Fit was perfect. My fabric was 3 1/2 x 9.
Priiscilla says
The measurements she gave were 3 1/2 by 9 inches at the top of this page.
Karen W says
I think she changed the size.
Janis Hammond says
I cut mine to 3 1/2 by 9, and it works great. I did sew one end closed before turning to eliminate some bulk. I literally dug scrapes of fabric from my trash can to make these-will be trying to sell some this weekend. Thanks for such a cute idea.
Joan says
I also had to increase the width to 3 1/2 inches in order to fit the chapstick. The length was fine. So my measurements were 3 1/2 inches by 9 inches.
Marca Pennington says
That is what she said to have the size. Check it out!
Karen W says
I’m thinking she edited the size.
Debi says
Great idea for using up scraps in the sewing room. I intend to use collegiate and sport team fabric pieces.

This is so cute. !!!!!
Ellen Hughes says
I had difficulty fitting the ring into the top as ut seemed to go through but not as double ring.. maybe you cn advise me. Otherwise great thank you
Amber says
I had to work at it too. It’s a little tricky-just keep trying to guide it in there and it should work.
Marcy says
I will try this and just hammer in a metal grommet. The small one. The exact name eludes me.
Rebecca P says
I attempted this today and it was WAY to small for a regular size Chapstick to fit in. What seam allowance did you use? I used 1/4 and then tried 1/8 and it was still to small :(. The length was a good one, but I ended up having to almost double the width in order to make it big enough for a stand size Chapstick. I was able to fit a soft lips into the size I made using your sizes listed above though
Amber says
I use about a 1/2 inch seam allowance and it fit a regular size chapstick just great, so not sure what happened with yours?
margy says
Rebecca, I had the same problem. Increased size to 3 1/2 in. I made a bunch of these today for my grandkids to put on their book bags. Love ’em!
Kylee says
i used 4 1/2 by 9 inches and it worked perfectly
J Bond says
Not all chapstick roller tubes are the same diameter. This works perfect for the traditional slim one. Many are a bit larger in diameter today. There is need for two sizes.
Beth says
Oh, I do love simple, quick projects like this! Definitely doing this later! 🙂
Tavette says
Good idea and I imagine threading the ring through the top is what holds your chapstick from falling out. By adjusting the measurements – it would be real handy to hold your lipstick if you’re going somewhere quick and only taking your drivers license rather than your whole purse.
We’ve gotta start thinking about quick, inexpensive gifts for Christmas and this will be the first one on my list.
