DIY 4th of July Dress for Girls

You already know that I have a problem with making things for little girls. We don’t need to discuss that. But you may not know that one of my biggest weaknesses is for 4th of July dresses or clothes for little girls! Last year I did this little red, white and blue baby dress. This year I went a simpler route but I still love how this DIY 4th of July Dress turned out:

Ya, I totally borrowed a little girl for this post. Isn’t she adorable?!

I wonder if her mom would let me borrow her on a more permanent basis. I don’t think I could do her hair quite like that though. Anyway, let’s make a dress.

DIY 4th of July Dress Tutorial:

Supplies Needed:

Soft cotton dress (or t-shirt). I got mine at Hobby Lobby.

SoSoft Fabric Paint (I used the kind with GLITTER in it!)

Vinyl to create a stencil

Paint brush

Painter’s Tape (or masking tape)

Prewash your dress.

Create a stencil with your sticky vinyl (you can get this at craft stores-you can also use contact paper but vinyl works better). I used my Silhouette cutting machine to make this stencil but you can also use scissors, an exacto knife or a punch.

Tape your dress in place. I recommend putting something between the layers to keep the paint from seeping through.

Center your stencil where you want it:

Start painting with your brush. It will take a decent amount of paint to get a nice, dark layer.

As you can see I also did some smaller stencils and painted stars with them too.

Then, using a slightly larger star stencil I added the red touches:

Wait for it to dry and you’re done!

But….if you really want to you could make these shoes to go with it! This tutorial will be coming to DecoArt’s blog soon!
