Football Bean Bag Chair Tutorial

I can’t ever think of a different way to start a football post than “Are you ready for some fooootballllll?!” But how cliche.I’m ready for some football. I love watching a good college football game with my favorite team playing.

I think it was my mom who came up with this crazy idea to make a Football Bean Bag Chair for my kids to watch the game in. I loved the idea but didn’t know if I could pull it off. I seriously dreamed about if for 2 nights before attempting it and I was worried it wouldn’t work out. It did and I absolutely LOVE it! Here’s my Football Bean Bag Chair tutorial for you:

As you can tell, my little Cougar fan likes it.

Now don’t be overwhelmed. Let me be the first to tell you that after 2 nights of stressing about this thing it turns out that it is actually super easy to make!

The pattern I am giving you is kid sized. You can easily size it up to make it for your man if you want. Christmas gift idea?

Football Bean Bag Chair Tutorial:

Supplies Needed:

  • 3 yards of brown fabric-I used corduroy and it worked great but any brown fabric will do. Sturdier is probably better though. That’s why I picked the corduroy.
  • White ribbon
  • Fabric glue (I used this Aleene’s fabric glue and it worked amazingly!)
  • Fray check (optional)
  • Bean Bag Fill (Now THIS is one big part that was stressing me out. I didn’t know if I would be able to find it. Turns out that Walmart sells it in their bean bag section. One large bag is only $12 and I only needed 1 bag. You can also find it online here.)

Instructions:

To start out you are going to cut 4 pieces of your brown fabric in the shape of a football. You need these pieces to be 45″ long by 20 inches” wide at their fattest part. So just mark your length and your width and then cut in a general football shape and you’re good.

Footballshape

Take one of those pieces and your ribbon and create the laces of the ball. I cut 1 piece of ribbon 24 inches long and then the others all about 5 inches long. I fray checked the ends first and then just started using the fabric glue to stick them to the fabric. I was amazed how well the fabric glue held them in place! Let that dry.

Lacing

Now, with right sides together, pin two pieces together along their long sides and sew them together.

Pintogether

Grab a third piece and sew it to one of those. Then grab your last piece and sew in on. Finally attach your first piece to your last piece but leave a large opening (at least about 20 inches) to pour your filling in.

Pour your filling in:

And pin it shut. I just machine stitched the opening closed. If you want to be really fancy you’ll hand stitch it. But I’m cool with a seam showing:

And you’ve got a football!

Now, let’s hope my team plays better this week than they did last week.

I think that I will make a lining out of muslin for the stuffing and add a zipper to the outside. Boys are really rough. I don’t want all those beads stuck to everything.

If you were making a man size bean bag chair how much material would you need and what the dimensions of the football be?
    Thanks

Sorry I am not sure! Just take the measurements for this one and size everything up a little and it should work. It’s fairly forgiving!

Such a creative idea! My kids would love to have their own spot to hang out and watch the game while mom and dad are glued to the TV hoping for a win! 🙂

What a great idea. Perfect for the kids room, and bean bags can always be puled out on the patio or the lawn for a big group of guests. Thanks for sharing this idea.

I am so glad you posted this…I have two granddaughters who’d love, love, love to have a bean bag chair. And, I too, was wondering where to buy the filling. Glad you were able to find a great local source.

These will make a couple of great birthday gifts….now just how am I going to wrap them…..lol!
