At church I work with the teenage girls (love it!) and this year the theme (churchwide-meaning all over the world) is “Embark in the Service of God.” To kick off this theme, a few weeks ago we had a fun little meeting and talked a lot about things we will be doing this year to serve others. I was given the assignment to make a take home gift of some sort for the girls and I came up with this little journal. It fits with the Young Women’s theme 2015 with a cute little ship and life preserver:
On the inside flap I put a favorite quote:
This is from a talk by President Thomas S. Monson:
The Savior taught His disciples, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.”
I believe the Savior is telling us that unless we lose ourselves in service to others, there is little purpose to our own lives. Those who live only for themselves eventually shrivel up and figuratively lose their lives, while those who lose themselves in service to others grow and flourish—and in effect save their lives.
This gave us a change to talk about saving our own lives by losing it in the service of others. Hence the life preserver on the front of the journal.
I then challenged them to use these journals to write down thoughts and promptings about serving others. And then to act on it.
Young Women’s Theme 2015 Journal Idea:
- Small journals (any variety should work)
- Scrapbook paper
- Decoupage & Glue Stick
- Small ship graphic (you can purchase this one for $3)
- Life preserver graphic (here’s one for $3)
- Red letters (use stickers or cut out with a machine like a Cricut)
- Small hole punch
Cover each journal with a coat of decoupage and then press scrapbook paper onto it. Trim edges.
Print and cut ships and life preservers. (I used my Cricut to do this-so handy! But you can do it by hand if needed.)
Glue ship in place.
Wrap twine around the book. Use a needle to poke a hole near the spine to loop the twine through there. Attach life preserver to this.
Add letters at the bottom.
Print quote and add to inside of journal.
