What’s the Project? This easy sewing project is as fun to sew as it is to use. Sew this simple phone wallet pattern-it’s so quick and easy and it’s a fun little gift. This is a fun beginner sewing project for kids or for anyone!
Experience (and watching my stats) tells me that you guys like quick, simple, easy sewing tutorials. So I’ve been brainstorming simple projects. Today I have one that takes probably under 20 minutes. Very quick and easy! It’s a Simple Phone Wallet Tutorial:
It’s just a little pocket to keep your phone it and I attached a clip so you could hook it on to your bag, keys, or whatever is handy for you. Just slide your phone in:
It’s designed similar to the Keychain Chapstick Holder. Can you tell I have a thing for pink polka-dots?
Simple DIY Phone Wallet Pattern
Supplies
- 1 Clasp (any sort of keychain clasp will work)
- Small amount of fabric
- Small amount of fusible fleece
Instructions
- You will want to cut your fabric so that it is twice as wide as your phone (with case if you keep it in a case) plus about 2-3 inches. So my phone is 2.5 inches wide. I cut my fabric about 8-9 inches wide.
- I cut the length of my fabric at about 14 inches and then cut off excess before I sewed it. Measure your phone’s length, double that and add a couple of inches.
- Now I have a piece of fabric that is about 9 x 14 inches. Cut a piece of fusible fleece the same size and iron it to the back of your fabric. (I will tell you that that is going to add bulk (and cushion) to your project. If your sewing machine struggles with a lot of bulk, use a lighter weight liner).
- Fold your fabric in half lengthwise (so that it is 4.5 inches by 14 inches) and stitch across one of the short sides and down the long side.
- Turn it all right side out. Press it flat.
- Now grab your phone. Fold the wallet up and test how far up you want it to go to match the size of your phone. Cut off any extra length that you don’t want.
- Fold under the unsewn edge. (Folding it all inward.)
- Stitch this edge closed.
- Now, fold the edge you just sewed up as far as you want it to fit your phone and sew up each side. Your phone should now be able to slip inside.
- Now to make the little strap, cut a piece of fabric about 4 inches long by 2 inches wide. Fold it in half with right sides together and sew up the long side. Turn it right side out and press it. Then fold it in half, loop your clasp though it and sew it in place in several places on the back of your wallet.
That’s it! So simple, right!?

could you add a patch pock on the back for ear buds a card or change? Maybe 4 inches wide by 2 and half deep. Maybe use a sew on snap to keep it closed. I like fusable fleece batting

Oh that’s a great idea!

I am totally making one of these, but I’m going to use it to hang my phone around my neck while mowing my yard. I can never put it in a pocket without sitting on it, and it won’t stay in my mower’s cup holder because my yard is too bumpy. So excited to get started! Hope I don’t screw it up, I am a total sewing newbie. Thanks so much for sharing the tutorial!

Great idea! Hope it goes well for you!

I did it! I am so excited, but it is huge! LOL. Do you have any suggestions on how to sew thicker material? I couldn’t get the material to feed through the beginning of the fabric (long side sewn & folded), but once I was over that hump, it was okay. Thank you for the simple tutorial, you have gained a fan :-).

You don’t have to use the lining if you want to make it less bulky and easier to sew. 🙂

Could I make it with felt without fusible backing?
Amber says
Sure!

I cant get this phone pattern to download or print. can you help me.
Amber says
There’s not an actual pattern to print because you need to size it to your phone. Every phone is different in size.

I enjoy doing this fun project. I made my loose because of the PopSocket and added a Velcro strap to hold the phone in

This is a great idea, Amber, thank you for sharing. I’m constantly trying to scale down the items that I carry – I’m down to a cell phone, wallet (small) and keys (too many, but they’re all needed) – and it’s great to have something compact, safe and cute to house the phone. The clasp for attaching to a purse strap or key ring is a plus! I love it.

Really cute phone pocket. I would probably make mine a little longer and fold over phone. Then I would have to put a small wool Applique on it! I’m just saying… Love your way of making it. Much faster then the way I made my first ones. Thanks for the tutorial! I am on it as I have a new phone and my old pocket no longer fits!
Kristy says
What size clasp and D ring did you use?
Amber says
Any is fine. Mine was probably about 1 inch.

This is really cute, and easy enough even a klutz like me could do it. But… Could you come up with a similar “pouch” that had a pocket with a clasp or a zipper on it to put ID and money in? That would make this perfect for running to the drug store or the gym, and would keep all the necessities in one small, easy-to-keep-on-your-person, place.
Amber says
Yes, that’s a great idea!

That is an adorable phone holder! Thank you for the pattern!

Hello – this is great! I now know what to make my seniors for graduation – perfect and not too $$ to make a bunch of them! Also thought your messenger bag tut is excellent! Thanks.

I just don’t understand why people have one wrist constantly “crooked” because they’re holding their smart phone (looks like an appendage) when there are such simple solutions as your phone holder which so easily clips on to your pants or strap of your purse.
It says a lot about our society – everyone is so tied to their phones. WHY??? Put the phone where it belongs, in your fleece wallet. Fleece won’t scratch your phone and it comes in so many attractive prints.

very cute. Just a thought…before you sew the turned-in edge at the end, insert the tab and just sew that whole thing at one time, maybe double stitching the top with the loop. Keep the ends inside? Thanks for the various projects.
Amber says
Yep! That would work for sure too!

Great idea!!!
Amber says
Glad you like it!

I just made this and love it. I was wondering if I could try using double the fabric instead of the fusing? I have to make quite a few of them and was trying to make them a bit less bulky.
Thoughts? suggestions?
Amber says
For sure!
