What’s the Project? Looking for some fun mystery books for kids that your little ones will enjoy? Here are 10 great books from several genres that your kids will love!
It’s the time of year when a little bit of mystery makes you feel like you’re being festive to the season right? A little bit of spooky for Halloween? I’m not someone who loves things that are scary and creepy, but a good, innocent, fun mystery is perfection.
My boys also love a fun mystery and they are all avid readers. They love to grab a good book and curl up on some of the big pillows we have and read for hours. So these great mystery books for kids that I am recommending today come recommended by my boys as well.
These are great for a variety of ages. Some of them I have read aloud to my boys, some they have read, some I actually read myself without the kids, but they are all fun and something I think your kids will like!
Also, every book that I am recommending today can be listened to on Audible. And if you don’t have an account to listen to books already, you can get a free 30 day trial to see if you like it! I think your kids would LOVE to listen to a fun mystery for Halloween or anytime!
10 Great Mystery Books for Kids:
I said 10 great mysetery books for the kids to read, but really, many of these are series, so it’s way more! Lots of reading ahead!
This is the classic spooky kid’s book, isn’t it? I remember reading it and loving it as a kid and when my 5th grader came home a couple of years ago having read it in class, he loved it so much that he wanted me to read it again. And I did and loved it again. Of all the books I am recommending today, this is the one that’s the most classic “ghost story” for sure and it gets just a little bit spooky. Cemetary, ghosts, unexplained things happening. It’s a fun story, but keep this one for your braver kids. (It’s really not too bad-just a tiny bit scary.)
When I see the cover of this book I swoon a little. This book and this series are probably my favorites that I’ve ever read to my kids. The Castle Glower is alive and changing and the young princesses and princes have gotten used to that. But when things in their kingdom start changing and their parents disappear, that’s when things start to get weird and they start to worry. Have I mentioned that I LOVE this series?
The Westing Game:
This book is completely nutty-in a good way. When my boys and I started this one we were kind of confused at first. There’s a ton of characters and a crazy mystery. Sixteen characters have to figure out who murdered another character and each of them only has a few of the clues. This one will keep you going with all the crazy twists and turns.
I’ve recommended this one before, but it’s a great mystery too, so I am including it again. When Miranda can’t find the key to her apartment-it’s been stolen-and mysteriously find a note reading: I am coming to save your friend’s life, and my own. I must ask two favors. First, you must write me a letter, she’s confused. But when she keeps receiving notes, and clearly from someone who knows her well, she’s worried. She’s got to figure out what’s going on.
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle:
It’s been a while since I read this one and I don’t remember the details, I just remember that I loved it! Murder on the high seas with a teenage girl caught in the middle of what’s going on and having to try to figure it out and take care of herself. This is one that preteen and teen girls will love.
Another series that I LOVED reading with my kids. These mysteries all center around the pets of a certain family. A vegetarian vampire bunny? Does it get any better than that? These books will have you laughing as you read and you will love the characters and the plots.
I hesitated on recommending this one because it seems so obvious! Of course the Harry Potter series is a great group of mysteries. You probably already knew that. But have you ever listened to these books? Of all the books I have ever listened to, I think they are my favorites. Jim Dale does an amazing job of performing these and you will find yourself lost in the stories all over again.
The Mysterious Benedict Society:
Four kids in a school, trying to figure out a mystery as they weave through the inner caverns of the school. I can’t tell it as well as the book description you’ll find at Audible, you’ve got to read that and it will have you hooked and wanting to read this book! It’s also got several sequels which I haven’t read yet, but I bet your kids will love the whole series!
A boy who secretly lives alone in the walls of a Paris train station. He’s working on a project and he’s got his own secrets, beyond even his secret dwelling. This was one that I read to my boys years ago and then they made a movie out of it and we had a blast watching it too.
A Series of Unfortunate Events:
This series is a fun and crazy concoction of stories. The writing is unbelievably good and the books just keep you reading and reading. The end is very surprising and leaves you thinking for sure. A fun series that your kids will enjoy!
What are your favorite mystery books for kids? Do you have some that you love?
Remember to grab your free one month trial on Audible if you haven’t already and start listening! I think it would be so much fun to let your kids listen to one of these for Halloween!
