I’ve got 2 really exciting things for you today! The first is a very easy (like sew two seams easy) ruffle maxi skirt tutorial. It’s perfect for little girls (or big girls!) and is easy and inexpensive to make and turns out SO cute!
The fun part about this is that I am giving you this skirt tutorial as part of Simple Simon and Co’s Skirting the Issue charity drive that they do every July.
Here’s the deal: make a skirt, donate it to a girl in need. More specifically a girl in foster care who just might need a cute new skirt as she heads to school this Fall.
I was a social worker years back working in the child protection field and foster children are very near and dear to my heart, so this is something I truly love to help with.

I would love for some of my readers to make this cute ruffle maxi skirt and donate it to Skirting the Issue!
Ruffle Maxi Skirt Tutorial:
- Ruffle fabric. I got mine at Hobby Lobby. I know you can get it online at Ruffle Fabric. I am sure you can get it other fabric stores as well. The amount you need will depend on the size of skirt you are making. To make this one I only needed about 1/2 yard.
Measure the girl you are sewing this for (if you can). You need the waist measurement and the length.
The girl I sewed this for was 8 years old. Her waist was 23 inches and length was 25.
Lay your fabric out and fold it in half so that the ruffles are on the inside.
Measure the top of the skirt. Because the fabric is folded you need to measure half of your waist measurement, so I would cut mine about 11 1/2 inches.
Then, cut the side of the skirt, angling out slightly as you cut.
Cut it about 1 inch longer than you need. At the bottom, cut carefully so that you don’t cut the bottom ruffle, but just cut the fabric under it.
Now, you should have one large, slightly angled piece of fabric.
Fold it in half again with the ruffles inside and sew up the side of the skirt.
Now, fold the top edge in (towards the non ruffled side) about 1 inch or so.
Sew around the to create waistband.
That’s it! You are done!
