It’s getting to be summertime finally! We got out of school last week and already have a long list of fun things we want to do and a couple of summer trips planned. One of my favorite things to do with my kids during the summer is to read books aloud with them. It’s a perfect activity for a lazy summer afternoon OR you can grab it on Audible and listen to it while you drive on a road trip.
I’ve got a list of book recommendations for you for this summer that I think YOU will love as well as your kids!
And let me just tell you-all of these can be found on Audible AND you can get a free 30 day trial so you can get a book a listen now for free! Then you can just listen while you drive. It will be perfect!
10 Great Books and Series for Road Trips This Summer:
Dig into a classic that will have your kids lost in a magic world, a world they will love whether they are familiar with this story or not.
Tuesdays at the Castle by Jessica Day George:
This is one of my ALL time favorite kids’ books, and not just books, it’s a short series. Once you hear the fun tales of the kids who live in the castle that has a life of its own, you can move on to Wednesdays, Thursdays and Friday (being released next year) with their own fun tales!
This book is a favorite of my boys, especially the 10 year old. I believe this author came to their school a few years back and now we have read each of these books. It’s a very quirky story about magic janitors and janitorial supplies and my kids love it! There’s 5 in this series. The 5th is on our summer reading/listening list this summer.
Bunnicula by Deborah and James Howe:
I can’t even tell you how much I love these books! They are so cute and funny-great for younger ages as well as older. If you have young elementary kids, try these. It’s a family with a bunch of funny pets…and a bunny with especially strange habits (don’t want to spoil it). There are 7 in this series.
The Great Brain by John Fitzgerald:
This series has been especially fun to read with my kids because it takes them back to days so long past that they almost seem foreign. It’s fun to get to read about kids in a small town well over 100 years ago and see what life was like back then. My kids are enthralled! There are 8 in this series.
This series is one of my all time favorites. It’s filled with mystery, intrigue, magic and great characters. Each book in this 5 book series just gets better and better. Love it!
The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall:
I love that even though this book is all about a family of sisters, my boys love it! Four girls with very different personalities and stories of their adventures. It’s got a fun feel for what every childhood should be like-summers full of playing and exploring outside and discovering life lessons. There’s 4 books in this series.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett:
Just a good, all time favorite and classic book. One of my very favorite stories ever! Secrets and mystery and unlikely friendships. Good stuff!
This was a very favorite of my boys. I read it to them when they were pretty little and they just loved it. You might have seen the movie, the book is even better. Funny, unusual story with great characters.
The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis:
Don’t overlook this classic series as a great read for the whole family. I read this one with my boys years ago when they were pretty little and they loved it! Great for all ages and there’s 7 books!
I hope you have a blast with these books! Let me know if you have other favorites!

I would have suggested Bunnicula if it didn’t make your list. The audio got us from Connecticut to Virgina several years ago. Hank the Cow dog is also a favorite as well as the Misty of Chincoteague series.

Hello! If you’re going to read The Secret Garden, then why not also add Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder, if you haven’t already. This is a great read for both boys and girls.
