I haven’t done a hooded towel tutorial for about a year I think, because frankly, after sewing all those hooded towels I got burned out. But I have had a lot of requests for more and I am feeling ready to make them again, so here you go! This year I am going to focus on character hooded towels. I will do a boyish one one month and then a girly one the next month. Kicking things off, I’ve got a Ninja Turtle hooded towel for you today!
Ninja Turtle Hooded Towel:
- 1 green bath towel
- 1 green hand towel (you will only use half)
- Small amounts of black and white fabric
- Small scrap of fabric in either red, orange, blue or purple, depending on which turtle you want to make
- Small amount of adhesive backed iron on heat transfer paper like Heat n Bond
- Ninja Turtle Hooded Towel Pattern Pieces
As with all of my hooded towels, I won’t walk through the basics of constructing the hooded towel here. I have a full tutorial on that here. Follow those instructions to assemble the towel. Here I will teach you to make the Ninja turtle part.
Cut your hand towel in half horizontally.
Fold the long selvaged edge (the one that you did NOT cut) under about 3-4 inches and sew in place. (This just makes the hood not quite as large and fit the kid’s head better.)
Cut out the pieces from the pattern. Also cut those pieces from the adhesive backed iron on transfer paper. Iron the transfer paper to the back of each piece.
Place the mask on your hand towel where you want it and iron it in place.
Add the eyes and eye balls where you want them and iron them in place:
Sew around each of these pieces with an appliqué stitch-a tight, zigzag. This can be tricky in parts because the towel is thick.
Now fold the towel in half with the face on the inside and sew up the back of the towel with a zigzag stitch. This will be on the raw edges from where you cut before.
Now turn the towel like this:
And sew a seam about 1 inch or 1 and half inches from the top to create a triangle across the tip. Snip off the excess fabric. This will make it so the towel is not pointy on top.
Sew hood to towel using these instructions and then give it your kiddo and watch them love it!
