Happiness in childhood comes in the small moments. The sweet little traditions that are remembered for a lifetime, the simple activities that families do together, the giggles shared between siblings. There is nothing I like more than watching my four little boys playing happily together. It doesn’t always happen-we have our fair share of fighting-but when the four of them sit down together and really get involved in something fun-there’s nothing better.
This summer they’ve built a cardboard box village in the basement together. They sometimes go out and dig in the garden together for hours. They have silly jokes that they share among themselves (that aren’t funny to anyone else). Several times this summer we have let all four of them sleep in the same room and it’s almost like magic in their world. Especially the little guys who really look up to the older ones.
This makes me think back on my own childhood. I have four brothers. While I always wished for a sister, I had plenty of fun with those brothers (and still do). Since I was the oldest, I conned them into all kinds of things-playing school and playing house and even dancing to Michael Jackson.
But I was also a bit of a Tomboy and one of our favorite things to play was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! It’s convenient that for most of our childhood there were just four of us (the other brother came along later) and there were four Ninja Turtles. Perfect! We each got to be one of the turtles (I was Donatello because purple is the most girly of the Ninja Turtle colors).
So it’s fun for me now to see my own little boys playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! It’s special that they can share something from my own childhood that bonded my brothers and I and that it now bonds them as brothers.
Last Christmas while I was doing some of my shopping I came across these amazing Ninja Turtle Pillow Buddies. I’ll tell you the truth, *I* fell in love with them right away. They are super big and soft and so much fun. I knew my two middle guys would each love to have one of these. I snagged a Donatello from Target for my eight year old right away:
Then I hunted down a Leonardo for my 5 year old. It had to be a Leonardo because he *is* Leonardo. My four boys have each chosen a Ninja Turtle to *be* just like my brothers and I did years ago. I finally found one and they each got their Ninja Turtle Pillow Buddy for Christmas:
But you know what else? When my mom got wind of these fun presents she decided to get one for my nephew who loves Ninja Turtles too so that he could join in on the fun. I love that it carried down not only through my family but through my brother’s as well.
And in true little boy fashion, they all love to play Ninja Turtles. I think we have just about all of the various turtles’ masks and pretend swords and my three year old can be found with them everywhere we go.
He thinks he is a fierce little Ninja Turtle and loves wearing this mask all the time!
It’s wonderful and nostalgic for me to watch my kids live out some of my own childhood memories on their own. I love that it gives me a little connection to their childhood and them to mine and I love that it gives them a connection to each other!
