What’s the Project? This tutorial will teach you how to make a pillowcase in under 30 minutes. It’s an easy sewing project and turns out very cute-something you will love sewing!
I’m bringing in a bonus post this week because I have a really fun project to show you today! It’s perfect, perfect, for anyone who has crafty kids or grandkids and wants a fun project this holiday season. Color your own Christmas pillowcase! It’s cute and festive but it’s literally hours of fun too!
I sat with my boys and colored and we listened to Christmas music yesterday afternoon and had a blast. I’ll show you how to make a pillow case that’s easy and cute, and if you use this fun Color Me fabric from Michael Miller you can color it too!
But I’m also going to teach you how to sew a pillowcase so that you can make this and any other pillowcase that you’d like!
Really, this is such a cute project for the holidays or any time of year!
This was a fun color your own fabric, but you can make this with any cute kid’s fabric.
As part of this tutorial, I would also like to show you how to make french seams. These will give the underside of the pillow a nice finished look.
You can do the french seams or just a basic seam, it’s up to you! Either way, it will be great!
How to Make a Pillowcase (With French Seams):
Supplies Needed:
- 3/4 yard of main fabric
- 2 1/2 inches accent fabric
- 10 inches cuff fabric
Sewing Instructions:
These instructions are to do this with french seams. If you don’t want to do the french seams then just do normal seams here.
Grab your accent fabric and your cuff fabric and put them together with WRONG sides together (the opposite of what you normally do). Sew a 3/8″ seam.
Then press that seam open:
Now fold that fabric on the seam so that right sides are together and sew a 5/8″ seam on the underside of the seam you just created:
Do this with your accent fabric and your main fabric as well. The underside should now look like this:
Optional: I topstitched each of those seams just because I like how topstitching looks.
Now fold the fabric so that right sides are together and sew up the bottom and the side. Use a zigzag stitch if you would like to prevent fraying.
Now simply fold the cuff fabric under about 2 inches and press and then under again about 2 inches and press and sew that seam and you are done! So easy!
You can do this with any fabric at any time of the year, I just thought this Christmas version was a lot of fun!
And cute too right?
I hope this has helped you learn how to sew a pillowcase and you enjoy doing it again and again.

I just love these. They’re so cute and would be so much fun to make for my grandchildren. It would be fun for them to open at Christmas at Grandma and Grandpa’s house and to keep them busy too while we finish getting the meal ready. Since I have to take a lot of breaks now while trying to make the meal, I’d be able to sit and join them and color too. 🙂

My kids have learned to sew making pillowcases. We have a ton of them! A fun (and I think easier) way to make the pillowcase and hide the seams is the hot dog method. Google it or you tube and there are a million tutorials. I love this color on fabric!
