What’s the Project? This donut cone recipe makes a really fun treat for the kids (and you too). Made with warm, sugar covered dough and filled with ice cream or pie filling, this makes an amazing dessert to enjoy in the summer or all year round.

This day has been perfect.
My kids woke up an hour after me this morning (meaning I got some me time in the quiet to start the day off).
Then, when I got home from a walk with a friend they were all playing nicely and had done their chores while I was gone. (What?!?)
The two older were headed out for a walk together (ok, motivated by a certain game on their phones) and the two younger were playing in their rooms together and then walked to the nearby pond to “fish.”
To be honest, this is maybe the first day all summer that they’ve been so great and I could feel like we were truly enjoying summer break.
So a fun donut cone treat filled with ice cream and topped and with sprinkles and whipped cream seemed like a great way to reward them for a fabulous morning and to top off the perfect summer day.
And they loved these donut cones!
It’s a cone made from warm dough and then brushed with butter and covered in sugar or cinnamon sugar to taste like a donut.
Then filled with ice cream or pie filling.
My boys each ate one and they said they have two disclaimers:
- You’ll get messy when you eat it! (Score-that just means it tastes amazing right?)
- You won’t need to eat anything else for the rest of the day because they are so filling.
These are designed after the traditional Hungarian chimney cones. Or you could call them churro cones. Whatever you call them, they’re GREAT!
And they are so easy because you can use Rhodes Bake N Serv Frozen Dinner Rolls for the dough. So simple! All you have to do is thaw it!

Yummy Donut Cone Recipe
Ingredients
Ingredients Needed:
- Rhodes Bake N Serv Frozen Dinner Rolls about 3 rolls per cone
- Butter or Margarine
- Sugar or Cinnamon Sugar
- Card Stock 12 x 12 sheets
- Stapler
- Foil
- Cooking Spray
- Ice cream or pie filling
- Toppings of your choice
Instructions
- The very first thing you need to do is get your Rhodes Bake N Serv Frozen Dinner Rolls out to thaw. Allow them to sit at room temperature until thawed-about 5 hours or so.
- While they are thawing, you will need to make some cones to wrap your dough around.
- Using a 12 by 12 piece of cardstock, trace a large circle using as much as the paper as possible (ie-make it big).
- Cut out the circle, then cut a quarter of it out (like Pacman).
- Now bend that to become a cone shape and staple it.
- Cover entirely with foil. Tuck extra foil inside the cone.
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Once your dough is thawed, grab about 3 of your rolls, smash them together and dust with a little bit of flour.
- Roll into a long strand of dough.
- Grease your foil covered cone heavily.
- Starting at the bottom of the cone, wrap your dough around the cone in a spiral pattern. Pinch the end to the other dough and then make sure to pinch the dough all over to make sure there aren't any holes.
- Stand upright on a baking sheet (lower the rack in the oven if needed) and place low in the oven. Back for approximately 20 minutes, until lightly browned.
- Remove the foil cone.
- Using a pastry brush, brush melted butter or margarine all over the cone. (My kids recommend doing this on the inside as well.)
- Then sprinkle with sugar or cinnamon sugar.
- Fill with ice cream or pie filling and serve while it's still warm if possible.
Eat up and enjoy a nice donut cone!
