My goal this summer is to give you some fun projects that you can do with your kids or grandkids this summer! (On a side note, when I did my reader survey last month I found out that MANY of my readers are grandmas! Hi Grandma!) So if you are looking for something fun to do with the littles this summer, here’s a very simple project that they’ll love and it will taste yummy! They are fun, swirly, colorful cookies:
And really, they are so easy to make! Very little prep on your part and then the kids can do the rest!
Rainbow Swirl Cookies:
Supplies Needed:
- Round Sugar Cookies-grab some pre-made at the store, use your favorite recipe or, do what I did and get some pre-made cookie dough and bake some up quick
- White frosting-Again, grab some pre-made or make it yourself
- Food colorings in bright colors
- Butter knives and spoons
Ok, start by mixing up a bunch of colors of frosting. You can do any colors that you want. I did mostly rainbow colors.
Now, grab a cookie and place some blobs of frosting on it with a spoon:
Then take a knife and spread in a smooth motion:
And you end up with something pretty like this:
And really, the kiddos can get creative. You can place the blobs however you want:
And then get a little more swirly.
I hope you have a blast doing this project with the kids!

Hi Amber! I’m one of the grandmas that read your blog and get your emails. I take care of two of my 2 granddaughters during the school year and then three (grandson) of them during vacations and summer!
I love this idea – the kids love the idea of making cookies but frosting them even more so! Thanks for the great idea – especially getting pre-made sugar cookies – that way the kitchen stays cool during this hot hot summer!
Blessings, Donna in FL
This makes me happy and I hope you and your grandkids have a blast!
Dear,
Any ideas of making these with icing that contains no or less sugar?
All the best,
Machtelt.
These were cue and an easy activity with my 5 year old. He picked the colors (black, brown, red, and yellow) so the cookies looked quite different but this is an activity I would repeate if it is requested.
Oh that makes me really happy to hear!
