My husband and I used to have a tradition that will always have a very sweet spot in my heart. When the kids were little enough that we couldn’t leave them home alone, we’d have an at home date night every single Friday night. We’d get take out and eat in and then we’d snuggle up on the couch and watch The X-Files-two episodes every Friday night. It was a tradition that we looked forward to every week. And because we only watched two episodes each week and there’s like 9 seasons, it took us a long time to get through them all. And we loved it.
Today, in honor of the Audible release of The X-Files: Cold Cases, let’s talk about books that keep you on the edge of your seat. Because just like The X-Files, we all love a little bit of mystery and suspense don’t we?
Books that Will Keep You on the Edge of Your Seat:
If you love a good mystery, here are some great books for you to read. Not all of these are your traditional murder, crimes, or ghosts, some are just great books that will keep you turning those pages, wanting to find out what happens at the end!
First, let’s start with the one I mentioned, The X-Files: Cold Cases.
First off, for all of you true The X-Files fans, this is narrated by the actors we love from the show! (Would it be the same without them?) This audiobook takes your right back to the characters and story you love, and brings them back into your world as you find out what brought Mulder and Scully out of reclusion and back into exploring the unsolved cases from The X-Files. You’ve got to get excited when you hear that “friends and foes of the agency long thought gone begin to inexplicably reappear” right? Grab this one on Audible now with a free 30 day trial!
The Name of the Star (Shades of London Series):
Things get a little crazy in London when Jack the Ripper like murderers start occurring all around town with no evidence leading to a suspect. Except that Rory Deveaux saw a man, a man that no one else saw, even her roommate who was with her at the time. This is the first in a series of stories about a secret ghost police agency in London. I’ve read and loved them all!
The Spy Wore Red: (also a series)
A 21 year old woman working as a spy in Europe during World War II makes for a fun story, but this is a true story, the story of Aline, Countess of Romanones, and her adventures as an undercover agent working amongst the beautiful people of Europe at that time. There’s love, there’s mystery and the fact that it’s true makes it all the more entertaining. And there’s several books that follow this one, all good.
Bianca is a new student at the Evernight Academy and worries that she won’t fit in. The other students all seem so above her. But then she meets a handsome boy and even as she begins to fall for him, he warns her to be careful. Things aren’t always what they seem. This is one that will keep you turning the pages for sure.
Like Sherlock Holmes? What if Sherlock had a female sidekick? I admit that I haven’t actually read the Sherlock series, but I loved this one (it’s a series too). It takes place years after the Sherlock books (he’s retired) and introduces Mary Russell, a young woman who stumbles upon Sherlock living along in the country and who becomes a partner to Sherlock as they take on a case of a kidnapping in London together.
This one is written for kids, but like so many good kids’ books, it’s fabulous enough for adults too. It’s a post apocalyptic book-two hundred years after the end of civilization as we know it. But now the lamps that keep the city lit are beginning to flicker and someone’s got to figure out what to do to keep the city lit. When two kids find a secret message, they know they’ve got to decipher it to figure out how to save their city. (Just typing this is making me want to read this out loud with my kids-they’ll love it!)
Have you read this one? Its by Stephenie Meyer (Twilight) but written for adults, not teens. It’s basically an alien love triangle, which sounds a little kooky, but it’s a fun story about two races trying to figure out how to live together.
Another kid’s book that is very worth reading! When Miranda can’t find the key to her apartment-it’s been stolen-and mysteriously find a note reading: I am coming to save your friend’s life, and my own.
I must ask two favors. First, you must write me a letter, she’s confused. But when she keeps receiving notes, and clearly from someone who knows her well, she’s worried. She’s got to figure out what’s going on.
OK, one more kid’s series, because I love them. This series is one of my very favorites. Two kids, siblings, discover that their grandparents are the caretakers of a refuge. But not just any refuge-this one is inhabited by all kinds of magical creatures. When rules get broken though and a demon is released, things get a little tricky. This is a five part series that just gets better and better as you go!
OK, do any of these sound good to you? Got your own recommendations?

I just finished reading “The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society.”
An author is looking for her new story idea. Someone suggests she research the German occupation during WW2 of the Isle of Guernsey, Told entirely in letters written back & forth with her to others.
