What’s the Project? Want to make your own bookmark in about 5 minutes? This cute bookmark is one of the easiest sewing patterns you will find and perfect for a beginning sewer to try. This only takes a scrap of fabric and is a fun project for kids and teens!
I’ve said it before and I will say it again! I LOVE summertime!
And one of the best parts of summer for me is reading. (And if you love reading too, be sure to check out these fun book recommendations!)
So…to fit with that theme, I’ve got a VERY quick and easy sewing project for you. It’s a bookmark that won’t fall out. It should take an experienced sewer about 5 minutes to make. Even a beginner can pull this baby off. I promise! And it’s fun to make your own bookmark!
It wraps around the book so that even if your kiddos pick your book up or if fall off your night stand, you won’t lose your page! (I need to make more of these!)
And, to make it ever more fun, I made mine reversible. So I can have a different bookmark depending on my mood.
Want to make your own bookmark too? I know you can do it!
Easy-to-Sew Bookmark Pattern
Supplies
- Scraps of fabric
- Small piece of elastic (mine was 1/2 inch wide but really, most any width will do)
Instructions
- Cut out 2 pieces of fabric that are about 3 inches wide by 12 inches wide. (Really you can vary this if you want-depending on how big or small you want your bookmark.)
- Cut your elastic about 8 inches long.
- Sew your fabric with right sides together. Sew up the two long sides.
- Turn it right side out and press it flat.
- Insert your elastic at the end and sew it in place.
- Do the same on the other end. And you’re done!

Thank you for the tutorial! I made one and it looks great, though I made it a bit too wide on one end so I used some hot glue to fix the edges to the other side of the bookmark that won’t be seen. Super pretty!

I found this post after looking up the bookmark one. Great book recommendations! I also really enjoyed Mandy by Julie Andrews! Amazing that she hasn’t written anything as a follow up. I would read a little to my daughters each night before bed when they were young! They are grown up now, maybe I need to read it again! Thank you for reminding me of it!

I was making some of these for my younger sister because she hates paper bookmarks and I thought this would be a cheap and easy alternative (she does like them!). And we noticed these can also make good headbands!

Great idea! I see we have the same taste in books. Jane Eyre is an all-time favorite and I love all of Kate Morton’s books. Have you ever read The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield? That’s another great one.
Amber says
Yes!! Read that one too!

I love this idea! I have made other bookmarks but none like this. What a great way to use up some scraps, too.

This is such a wonderful idea. My great-grandchildren are being home schooled and I will supply each of them some so they will have no excuse for losing their place in their books. I also sew for needy children and will look into their needs for these. I am a 90 year old widow with time on my hands to do for others.
Amber says
Good for you for serving others!
