What’s the Project? If you want to spoil someone on their birthday (even if they are far away), this birthday box or party in a jar is a fun way to surprise your friend! Fill it up with all kinds of birthday goodies and it makes a perfect birthday gift!
I just love celebrating birthdays! I wonder if I will ever outgrow that? I know some women mourn when their birthday rolls around, but I love it.
This week though we are celebrating my little boy’s birthday. And I love celebrating my kid’s birthday too! And my friends and neighbors and family.
He’s turning 7 and I have parties on my mind. Last week I shared birthday invitations. Today I have some creative birthday gift ideas. I am calling the first a Birthday Box and the second Party in a Jar:
A super fun and easy way to celebrate a birthday!
Birthday Box:
This Birthday Box is so easy! I think of it as something you might send to a college kid away at school or someone who needs a little pick me up other than having a treat delivered to them. You can put whatever you want in it, but here’s what I put in mine:
- Cake Mix
- Sprinkles
- Fun Cupcake liners
- Frosting
- Party Blowers
- Candles
- Fun Straws
What else would you put in it? Who would you give it to?
Party in a Jar:
Here’s the party in a jar:
This is actually what I am giving my son for his birthday today. (Can I confess that he found it in my closet and I lied and told him it was for someone else! Little stinker!)
He didn’t have a lot of ideas of what he wants for his birthday so I decided to get creative and made this. It’s a compilation of things he loves, all stuffed down into a jar. So easy and could be done for ANYONE! Just choose things they like, get a jar of any size and go for it!
Here’s what I put in mine:
- Favorite candy bars
- Small football
- Small Minecraft toy
- Gift Card to his favorite place-Pizza Hut!
- Gum
- Tic Tacs
- Punch Balloons
- Starbursts
Really, you could do anything with this! I used a large cookie jar size jar for it but if you want to go smaller just try a mason jar!
Now, want to make it extra fun, add a cute birthday tag. I have lots to choose from here:
I want to hear your spins on this birthday box or party in a jar idea! If you make one for someone, come tell me about it!

Thank you for this great idea, I’m doing this for my sister who’s in her last year of college. I’m doing it for Valentine’s tho, she’s single and our late mother always sent her something so I’m taking over until Cupid strikes. Filling a fancy box with Valentine’s socks, candy, and some jewelry I’ve been making for her:)

I love your ideas. I do something similar for people that I think need a cheer up. I call it a stress box & I fill a nice jar or container with treat size chocolate & sweets & I add a poem about not giving up & trying to be optimistic. The intructions read something like this: open jar, put hand into jar, grab one item, put lid back on jar, open item, eat slowly, repeat until you feel better or the jar is empty. Refills available on request.
Thanks for all your good ideas.

These are such fun ideas. I have used these ideas for care packages towards my husband and those we know who are in the military and deployed. Things I have also included where small party plates, napkins, and forks to eat with, and party balloons. Instead of a cake mix because they can not cook out there, I would include pre made wrapped treats, enough for them to share. To make the inside of the box feel more like a birthday I would line the inside of the box with birthday wrapping paper . It gives them a small piece of home. I also do this with holidays..heart themed for valentines day, halloween themed for October, etc..Lots of fun to make and receive!

I did a “Birthday in a Box” (extra large) covered in wrapping paper and a colorful bow for my youngest daughter’s 18th birthday. I attached a Mylar and a 2 latex balloons to each individual gift bag (3) so the ballons wouldn’t fly away when the box was opened. Her smile was priceless.

This idea doesn’t have to be just for kids, when my daughter in law was in the service, and over seas, I sent her a birthday box – pre-made packaged cake, icing, candles, decorations the whole nine yards. She loved it – a little piece of home half way around the world. I sent enough for her whole platoon. She even asked if I would send one for her friend who’s birthday was the next month.
Amber says
Oh for sure not just for kids! What you mentioned is just the type of thing I was thinking of!

I really enjoy your projects. My grandson was great at finding things too. I have only two grandchildren, he and his sister. His other grandmother had three additional grandsons. I would tell him it was for my other grandchildren. He was very skeptical, he was three. He wanted to know their names and why he had never seen them. I told him Frank and Lillian. He was mostly convinced, but I told him the truth then. Children are such a wonderful gift, they keep us on our toes. LOL

Funny!!!
