It’s always fun to sew things for babies, right? I loved the easy baby bib tutorial from Kimberly at Sweet Red Poppy last month. So easy, so cute and seriously-her baby is so perfect. (Seriously-go look at that post if you want to see some cute baby pics!) This month she’s bringing us another fun, easy baby sewing tutorial-this time it’s fabric baby blocks!
Hi, It’s Kimberly from the sewing blog Sweet Red Poppy and I’m so excited to share this easy baby block tutorial with you today! My daughter is turning one in a few weeks and I wanted to make her something special. I know she’s going to love these fabric blocks and the best part was they were super easy to make!
Supplies Needed:
- Rotary Cutter and Mat
- 5 or 6 Coordinating Fabrics (¼ yard of each)
- Coordinating Thread
- 1 Bag Poly-Fill
Instructions:
With a rotary cutter, cut your fabric into 5″ squares. You will need 6 of these 5″ squares to complete each block. Determine how many blocks you would like to make and multiply that number by 6.
If you are using a lighter weight fabric you can fuse interfacing to the back of each square to make it sturdier.
Begin by stitching square 2 to square 4, continue on by attaching square 3, and then sew 5 and 6 together next. Now connect 5 to 2 and 1 to 2. Remember to start and stop 1/4 inch in from the edge of the fabric.
Don’t forget to start and stop your stitching 1/4″ from the edge of the fabric!
Fold square 1, 3, 4 and 5 up and sew each seam. Finally sew square 6 to all four sides, leaving a 2-inch opening.
Carefully clip the corners, cutting close to but not through the stitching. This will reduce bulk.
Use a chopstick to push each corner out.
Using a needle and thread, hand sew the opening closed using a ladder stitch.
Variations
Embroider one square for each block with the letters of the child’s name.
Add a squeaky toy to one of the blocks
Sew a loop or ribbon in one of the seams to create a tag
Place a crinkly material inside of the block to make a fun noise.

What fabric did you use? I’ve searched all over the internet for something similar, and I’m coming up with nothing!

Trasity, this tutorial is over a year old. By now that fabric line is probably long gone. Just find some fabrics that you love and your project will come out beautiful!
