In my baby’s room I have 4 cute little cartoonish animal pictures. When I sit and rock him I look at those pictures and it was one of those pictures that gave me the inspiration for this towel. It’s a cute and quirky Dragon Hooded Towel:
Is he a dinosaur or is he a dragon? Well, he could be either, but I’ll give you a clue (if the post title wasn’t enough). Mine breathes fire. But you want to call it a dino? He (or she) could be that too.
I am so happy with how this hooded towel turned out. I started out making him not quite sure what I was going to do, but the end result is great! I think this is my favorite hooded towel so far.
Dragon Hooded Towel Tutorial:
Supplies Needed:
- 1 bath towel in any color
- 1 hand towel in the same color
- 1 hand towel in an accent color
- Small amounts of white and black fabric and iron on transfer paper
Instructions:
Because I have done several hooded towel posts already, I am not going to go into great detail about all of this. The frog towel post has a lot of detail about how to do all of this, so refer to that if you need the help.
But here’s a rundown. Start out by cutting your hand towel in half. Fold the finished edge of 1 piece in about 3-4 inches and sew it in place. Turn it over and work on the back of that.
Cut out your eyes and put iron on paper on the back of them. Iron them in place where you want them to go and then use a tight zig zag applique stitch to sew them in place:
Now use the other half of your hand towel to cut out a snout. It’s basically just a circle cut in half. Then I used felt to cut out a bunch of teeth. Place your teeth between the two halves of the circle facing inward.
Put your top piece in place and sew around the snout leaving the straight edge open. Turn it right side out. Now place your snout where you want it (just below the eyes) on your towel and run a tight zig zag stitch across the straight edge. (BUT-if you want him to breathe fire, put some fire under there before you stitch:
When you stitch it should catch your fire and hold it in place. If it doesn’t just stitch it on.
To make the spikes use your accent color and cut out triangles. I did 4 spikes so I needed 8 triangles:
Now sew two sides of your triangles and turn them right side out.
For the spike on the top of the towel I cut a small slit (about 2-3 inches) above the eyes on my dragon, wedged the spike down in there and then sewed it closed from the underside.
Then, to do the other three, simply fold your towel in half so that the face is on the inside. Line your spikes up so they are facing inside just like you did with the teeth before. Do a zigzag down the towel. This will both from the hood and sew your spikes in place:
Turn your hood right side out and you should have a cute little dinosaur or dragon face looking back at you! Roar!
To attach the hood to the towel simple center it on the towel and do a zigzag stitch to hold it in place. To see how I do it check out the frog again.
Isn’t he is cute?
And the dragon is too. Hee hee!
One more:
If you like this guy you need to check out is friends!

I’m having trouble. I can’t seem to get the nose sewn on to the hood. Is there a special setting or foot you use to attach it?
Amber says
Eeek! It can be hard because there’s so much bulk there. Did you try an extra strength needle?
Jenny says
Just finished it for my great nephew Alfie whi is 19 months – can’t wait for him to see it. Thanks for instructions.

I can’t find the link for theattern pieces dragon pattern piecs and some of the other towel patterns. Thank you! they are darling!
Amber says
I didn’t do pattern pieces on all of them because I thought people could do it without. I can create them tough if needed?
Dede says
How did the felt wash? did it fall apart? Is there something better that you used?
Amber says
You know, I gave that as a gift so I don’t know for sure. I know felt can get kind of pilly so you can definitely use something else if you want.
Maretta says
My grandson would love any of them, but I’m especially fond of the dragon for some reason!

I love your hooded towels & have made several for my toddler, but now her teenage cousins want them too….how do I alter the pattern to fit a teenager? Should I use a whole hand towel?
Amber says
I wold actually think you would do it the same but maybe find the biggest bath towel you possibly could? I don’t know!
Gweny says
I doubt this will be read.. But as far as the teen size.. I would use a solid color beach towel and a bath towel for the hood.. Just a thought..
Amber says
Good idea!
