If there’s one thing my kids don’t need any more of it’s stuffed animals, but if there’s one thing my kids love…it’s stuffed animals. And really, who can resist a cuddly, cute stuffed friend? When my five year old had his tonsils out two years ago, a good friend brought him a snuggly, soft stuffed puppy to comfort him. That dog is still a favorite today. He was something of a superhero for my little guy back when he was recovering. And today he’s REALLY a superhero because now I made him a mini superhero cape for stuffed animals. Now he’s just like puppies from Disney’s Movie: Super Buddies
Pretty fun. My kiddo loved it. And hey, if the dino’s feeling super one day, HE can wear the cape.
This mini superhero cape idea was inspired by the new Disney Super Buddies movie that my boys watched. Think group of cute little puppies in capes saving the world. You can see why the stuffed dog needed a cape right?
Oh, and it’s personalized. His name is Balloon, so he’s got a super B.
Think your littles might like one of their stuffed friends to become super? Let’s make a mini cape.
Mini Super Hero Cape for Stuffed Animals Tutorial:
Small amounts (like fat quarter size) of two coordinating fabrics
Bias tape in coordinating color
Iron on fusing
First off, find a stuffed animal to make this cape for. Then measure the length of the stuffed animal from the nevk to the bottom.
This will give you an idea of how long you want you cape. My dog measured about 7 inches long, so I cut my fabric about 8 or 9 inches long to allow for seams.
You can also measure around the neck if you want idea of how big to make the neck hole.
Then cut your fabric in roughly a half circle shape. Mine is probably about 18 inches wide but this will vary by how big your stuffed animal is. Cut it large if you aren’t sure and the try it around your animal and size down if needed.
With both pieces of fabric cut, sew all the way around leaving only the neck part unsewn.
Turn it right side out, push out the corners and press.
Now, cut a piece of bias tape big enough to go around your neck hole and to extend long enough to be the ties on the cape as well.
Find the center of your now cut bias tape and pin it to the center of your neck hole. Then pin it the around the rest of your neck hole.
Tuck the ends of the bias tape under and sew along the whole length of the bias tape creating the straps and sewing it to the cape.
If you want to personalize the cape, iron your fusing on to a scrap of fabric and then cut your letter out of it and iron it in place on the cape.
Your kiddo will love it. (You don’t have to tell them how easy that was. Just let them think YOU’RE a superhero.)
And I bet they’ll love the new Disney Super Buddies movie too. Get ready for an epic tail (get it?!) with cute puppies in capes that the whole family will laugh at and love! Seriously, my kids loved it so much they ran upstairs to get their OWN capes to wear while they watched the movie and now they are playing Super Buddies every day. It was a HUGE hit!
Disney’s Super Buddies is available to own on BluRay and DVD beginning August 27th.
