You all know that vinyl is all the rage for home decor lately. I guess really it has been for a few years. Well, when my hubby asked for help decorating his office at work he probably wasn’t expecting me to bring in the vinyl but I thought he would love this idea. I have seen similar ideas on the Internet several times and have been planning to do this for him for a while.
My husband is a chemistry professor and my family lovingly calls him Dr. J. So this is perfect for him! I’m calling it my personalized periodic table art, but basically, it’s just spelling out a name from the table of elements.
Personalized Periodic Table Art:
This wasn’t my original idea. I saw it a year or so ago and planned to do it and then Becky over at U-Create did it last week and so I decided to try my own twist on it.
I am going to send you over to the post at U-Create to find out more about how to get your name from the table of elements, but let me show you how I created it with vinyl.
I used my Silhouette to cut out my vinyl (handy!). I just created a square to cut:
And the did the letters that I needed separately to save space when cutting on the vinyl. (This is in Times New Roman font.)
By far the trickiest part of this project was trying to line everything up perfectly before adhering it to the wood. I found that if I left the backing on and traced where I needed it to go and then removed the backing it helped. You can see my faint trace lines:
And really it’s as simple as that. I was pretty excited to show this to my husband and I think he really likes it. I think his students that come to his office will like it too. Perfect for a chemistry professor.
