It’s been a while since I’ve been this excited about a project I’ve done. But I love this one. I keep walking past it in my house and getting excited all over again. I’m calling it my Mom’s Command Station. It’s hanging by my garage door where everyone can see it and I have easy access to it on the way in and out of the house. Basically it’s just a place to keep important reminders. And my keys.
It’s got a bulletin board, magnet board, chalk board and key hooks all in one. Now the fun from this project gets even better. I was teamed up with another blogger to do a thrift store challenge. We each went to the local thrift store and bought about $15 worth of stuff. Then we swapped stuff and had to come up with a project from what we were given. Want to see what my partner came up with from her stuff? Check her out at A Little Tipsy.
One of the items I was given by my blogger was a jackpot. I knew it as soon as I saw it. This is what it looked like before I started:
And here’s what I did to it.

Now I realize that not everyone is going to have the same big frame thing with work with, but you could make this work a lot of ways. Find something similar at your own thrift store or create something similar using picture frames and attach them.
I started by sanding the vinyl lettering off the top:
Then I gave it a coat of paint. I love this turquoise DecoArt Home Decor Acrylic Paint. It’s not the first project I have used it for.
To do the chalkboard part I used a foam roller and the metal magnet board. I gave it a coat going vertical, allowed that to dry for about an hour and then gave it a coat going horizontal and allowed that to dry. I was surprised how well the paint stuck to the metal of this magnet board.
Then, when it was all dry, I took the chalk and “tempered” the chalkboard by rubbing the chalk all over it and then wiping it off. And voila! I had a chalkboard.
I had some cork board still lying around from this project. You can get it at any craft store. I simply measured the openings in the frame and cut the cork board with scissors. Then I hot glued it in place and put a piece of thin cardboard on the back.
Last I added the hooks. These are just clothes hooks I found at my local hardware store. They’re great for holding keys.
Then I added some picture hooks to the back and hung it. Love it!
